Brownstein Takes State Bar of California EcoPledge

Brownstein takes State Bar of California EcoPledge and becomes first private law firm to adopt sustainability commitment.

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s longstanding commitment to keeping its own businesses practices environmentally sustainable is now official. This month Brownstein became the first law firm to sign on to the California State Bar’s Eco-Pledge. “Committing to sustainability in our own legal practices is vital to collaborative environmental change in California and doing so helps us fulfill our responsibility to serve as leaders in our communities,” said Beth Collins-Burgard, of counsel in Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s Santa Barbara office and a member of the California State Bar Environmental Law Section Committee. “It is our hope that other private firms will join in this commitment toward greener business practices.”

The Eco-Pledge was developed by the State Bar of California in response to the amount of paper, water and other resources consumed by the legal industry, and the realization that environmental protection, climate change, and related environmental and social issues are urgent problems that require action. By signing the Eco-Pledge, Brownstein is committing to the State Bar’s requirements to assign someone in the firm to implement the applicable law office sustainability policies to educate employees regarding sustainability and the firm’s policies, work with landlords to implement green building operations, and annually review the sustainability policies and their implementation.

“Given the firm’s specialized practice in the areas of energy, renewable energy, water law, clean-tech, climate change, green building, and several other categories that fall under the umbrella of sustainability and conservation, it is imperative that we lead the effort to bring best practices regarding sustainable business operations to our own law practice,” said Robert Saperstein, managing shareholder for the California offices of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck. “Sustainability is a commitment that we take seriously, and that extends to our office operations. We look forward to implementing a new policy and making an impact at the firm.
