Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck announced today five new shareholders: Blair E. Lichtenfels (Denver), Rebecca L. Miltenberger (Las Vegas), Matthew R. Nyberg (Denver), Jonathan Sandler (Los Angeles) and Sarah M. Stettner (Denver); two Of Counsel: Michael D. Hoke (Denver) and Julie A. Sullivan (Denver); and two Senior Policy Advisor and Counsel: Melissa L. Kuipers (Denver) and Alisa Nave-Worth (Las Vegas).

Founded in 1968, Brownstein practices in the areas of corporate, litigation, natural resources, public policy and real estate. With more than 250 attorneys and legislative consultants in offices across the western U.S. and in Washington, D.C., and Atlantic City, the firm works in industries ranging from health care, real estate, hospitality, private equity and telecommunications, to technology, construction, energy, banking and finance, water and gaming.


Working in Brownstein’s real estate department, Blair E. Lichtenfels advises prominent metro developers in connection with urban infill redevelopment and new development projects. Her practice encompasses entitlement analysis, securing required land use approvals, acquisitions, providing community outreach advice and advising on public-private partnerships and negotiations. Lichtenfels’ experience includes drafting and negotiating Public Improvement Fee (PIF) covenants, implementing small planned community regimes and complex public financing for various development projects.

Rebecca L. Miltenberger is a member of the firm’s real estate department and her practice focuses on complex commercial transactions including acquisitions, dispositions, financings, developments and leases of real property assets, foreclosures, deeds in lieu of foreclosure and other corporate and commercial transactions. Miltenberger’s commercial finance practice includes assisting borrowers and lenders with loan restructuring, issuing opinion letters and advising clients as to enforcement matters relative to loans secured by real property.

Matthew R. Nyberg is an attorney in the corporate and business department and trusted outside counsel to businesses in diverse industries. His practice focuses on general corporate and business law for clients ranging from startups and early stage growth companies to large private equity firms and their portfolio companies, with a particular emphasis on the middle market. Nyberg has extensive experience in a broad variety of transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, minority investments, follow-on investments, divestitures, debt and equity financings, leveraged buyouts and corporate restructurings.

Jonathan Sandler, of the firm’s litigation department, is an experienced trial litigator and is well-versed in complex commercial litigation specializing in the areas of business, healthcare, real estate, negligence, fraud and employment matters. With numerous jury and court trials completed throughout Southern California, Sandler has litigated a wide range of matters, including business disputes, managed care liability, first- and third-party health service contract disputes, payor/provider contracting disputes involving statewide agreements, ERISA and Medicare preemption, commercial properties, residential complexes, employment, restaurants and nightclubs.

Sarah M. Stettner, a member of the litigation department, is a skilled employment counselor and experienced litigator. Stettner represents employers in all areas of employment law, including employment discrimination litigation and counseling, wrongful termination litigation, wage and hour issues, federal and state employment law counseling, and human resources counseling and advice. With an employment practice informed by her years of trial experience, she is adept at giving her clients the tools to mitigate risk and identifying potential concerns well before they become issues. Stettner’s experience includes state and federal court litigation, defense of matters at the EEOC and CCRD, and representation of clients at the Department of Labor.

Of Counsel

Working in Brownstein’s litigation department, Michael D. Hoke focuses his practice on complex civil litigation. He has represented clients in various state and federal courts as well as administrative actions, including enforcement actions brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Colorado Attorney General. He has significant experience with securities and municipal finance litigation, state preemption issues, municipal liability, election law, employment issues and contract disputes. Hoke’s clients have included municipalities, trade groups and associations, broker-dealers and other financial services firms, energy companies, media companies and entities in a wide variety of other industries. 

Julie A. Sullivan works with the firm’s health care group and provides legal guidance in complex regulatory and transactional matters in the health care and life sciences industries. Having represented a wide range of health care providers and pharmaceutical and medical device companies, Sullivan counsels clients regarding compliance with state and federal health care fraud and abuse, Stark/ physician self-referrals, false claims, fee-splitting, patient brokering, corporate practice of medicine, certificate of need, licensure and accreditation, Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, medical staffing, medical privacy and health information technology laws. She also conducts due diligence and negotiates health care and life science company acquisitions.

Senior Policy Advisor and Counsel

Melissa L. Kuipers is a member of the firm’s government relations department and is a leading lobbyist and seasoned strategist at the Colorado Capitol. Kuipers has sought to combine her passion for law and politics throughout her career, beginning her political endeavors at age 15 when she served as a page in the Florida Senate for then Sens. Charlie Crist (R-St. Petersburg) and Don Sullivan (R-Seminole). While Kuipers’ Republican roots run deep, she is able to work across the aisle and build bipartisan stakeholder coalitions for the benefit of her clients. She actively leads negotiations between the Senate, House of Representatives and governor and her ability to achieve creative results for her clients is unmatched.

A member of the firm’s government relations department, Alisa Nave-Worth has extensive legal, political and public policy experience in Nevada, which she brings to bear implementing and advocating legislative strategies before state and local agencies for a wide range of corporate clients both in Carson City and throughout Nevada. With over a decade of experience at the nexus of politics and government affairs, she offers clients the unique perspective of a seasoned campaign consultant with significant on-the-ground experience who is also an accomplished attorney. She brings strong relationships with lawmakers and regulators and a reputation for honesty and integrity to her clients.
