Paul O'Gara is widely recognized for his strong capabilities in licensing as well as M&A proceedings for significant casino and hotel clients. He is described as "very knowledgeable and experienced." - Chambers USA, 2020
Ask about the gaming industry on the East Coast, and you’ll likely hear Paul O’Gara’s name. With over three decades of experience in gaming law, Paul is well known and highly respected by legal colleagues and government gaming regulators alike. He represents many premier casinos, casino holding companies, financial institutions and investors, as well as those who do business with casinos before the New Jersey Casino Control Commission and other gaming regulatory bodies both in the United States and foreign jurisdictions.
Paul has been deeply involved in the evolution of the gaming industry and, along with it, gaming law as it applies to both brick-and-mortar and online gaming. Based in our Atlantic City office, Paul’s work for major gaming clients such as Caesars Entertainment takes him from New Jersey to New England to Asia and beyond. With the recent repeal of the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) allowing states to pass legislation to legalize sports betting, Paul advises clients on what’s required for companies to become operational and gain access to brick-and-mortar and online sports betting opportunities.
In addition to gaming-related issues, Paul has represented individuals, companies and organizations with respect to other regulated leisure activities. His background encompasses a wide range of areas, including gaming-related compliance and securities issues.
A former officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, Paul is a member of the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation.
As national thought leaders in gaming & gambling, our gaming team has been called to play a central role in one of the most significant developments for the sector of recent times. We have been providing strategic and legal counsel to multiple entities in the roll-out of both in-casino and on-line sports wagering in the state of New Jersey and in connection with its potential roll-out into other states across the US. Our team also has played a significant role in paving the way for this critical new development in US gaming law, confirming our market-leading work on this field.
Our national gaming team represented Ocean Walk and its principals in the acquisition, financing and development of the Ocean Resort Casino in Atlantic City. The property, formerly known as Revel Casino Hotel, consists of a hotel & casino with circa 1,400 rooms situated on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Our team also assisted in obtaining the required licensure arrangements for the facility in readiness for its opening in summer 2018. This matter confirms how our team has the ability to provide the full range of sector-specialist corporate/M&A; financing; development; licensing and regulatory services required on such major mandates.
